Ice Floating: Kola Bay near Murmansk or the White Sea?

Participants in orange flotation suits among ice floes

Our ice floating programmes take place in two different areas: Drovyanoye on Kola Bay near Murmansk, and the White Sea coast towards Kandalaksha. Both involve a specialist suit and an operator-led session. The journey is the main difference to settle before you book.

If you are fitting the activity into a short Murmansk stay, start by looking at Kola Bay. If you want to include the White Sea coast, allow for the longer return road trip and ask for a schedule built around your session.

Kola Bay: with a transfer or arriving independently

The Ice Floating in Murmansk programme takes place at Drovyanoye. The main option includes the session, return transport from Murmansk and driver waiting time. There is also an activity-only option for guests making their own way to the venue.

With a transfer, agree the pick-up point and return arrangements when booking. If you choose the activity-only option, confirm the venue address and meeting time before making your own transport plans. Those options should be compared on the same basis: a session on its own does not include the journey.

White Sea: plan for the road journey too

The White Sea Ice Floating trip from Murmansk travels towards Kandalaksha. It has its own venue and return transfer, and takes longer than the Kola Bay option. The session time helps determine the rest of the day.

Ask for the planned pick-up, travel and return times before adding dinner reservations or another excursion. The published programme does not give one fixed duration for every departure, so we would not suggest arranging a tight connection around it.

Meal stops and refreshments also need a clear place in the itinerary. Check what is included and what you will pay for separately.

What happens at the venue?

Allow time for fitting the suit and listening to the operator’s briefing before the water session. Afterwards, you need time to leave the water and change before travelling on.

Ask what to wear under the supplied equipment and what personal items to bring. Follow the venue’s instructions for entering, floating and leaving the water. The activity name and photographs are not a substitute for that briefing.

English-speaking accompaniment and the language used by venue staff are separate details. Confirm how you will receive and understand the activity instructions when arranging your booking.

Does ice floating always mean floating among ice?

The current tour pages describe November–April programmes. That is a seasonal programme window, not a promise of ice cover on your date. Conditions at the venue determine the session format.

If ice in the water is central to the experience you are hoping for, say so before booking and ask what can be confirmed for the chosen location and date. Do not choose between the two trips from a winter photograph alone.

Details to confirm before paying

  • Venue: Drovyanoye on Kola Bay or the White Sea trip towards Kandalaksha.
  • Transport: your pick-up and return, or the activity-only meeting arrangements.
  • Participation: available suit sizes and the operator’s requirements for each guest.
  • Timing: the activity slot, changing time and the full excursion schedule.
  • Language and meals: how instructions will be explained and what food or refreshments are included.

For children or anyone unsure whether they can take part, ask the operator about their requirements before booking. Give the manager the details of your group so the selected operator can confirm who can take part and which suits are available.

Looking at other activities for the same stay? Read our winter activity comparison and three-day or four-day itinerary guide. Choose the floating venue first, then fit the rest of the trip around the confirmed timing.
