Huskies, Reindeer or a Sámi Village: Tours from Murmansk

Winter activities
A husky tour, a reindeer visit and a Sámi village excursion can appear together in a Murmansk itinerary, but they are not the same experience. Start with the activity you want most: time with dogs, a sled ride, a cultural visit or a combined day. Then check the programme line by line.

If huskies are your main reason to go
Choose the husky visit from Murmansk if you want the dogs to be the focus. The programme includes meeting the dogs and handlers, photographs and a 1 km sled ride when there is sufficient snow. The encounter and the ride should be treated as separate parts of the visit.
The listed package includes a pelmeni lunch. Tell the manager about allergies or dietary requirements before booking, so the meal can be checked. Do not assume a vegetarian or halal alternative is available without confirmation.
Ask how long the visit will take with transport, what clothing you need and which conditions apply to the ride. A private arrangement may differ from the published group programme. If a sled ride is essential to you, make that clear before you choose dates.
If you want a Sámi village and reindeer visit
The Sámi village and reindeer programme combines a cultural visit with animal encounters. Its listed activities include stories by the fire in a chum tent, games, reindeer feeding, meeting huskies and photographs. The cultural programme is around three hours, with travel time additional.
A 600 m reindeer sleigh ride is listed when snow conditions allow. That is a reindeer ride, not a husky sled ride. The presence of dogs in the programme does not make husky sledding an inclusion.
Broth and herbal tea are listed, rather than a full lunch. Allow for this when planning the rest of the day. Warm outerwear is part of the programme, but confirm sizing and what you should still bring. The visit introduces the activities described on the tour page; do not expect every cultural or animal experience mentioned in a general Murmansk guide.

If you want the combined programme
The Sámi village and snowmobiles programme brings together the cultural part, animal encounters, the specified husky and reindeer rides, and an instructor-led snowmobile activity. Its current inclusions also name lunch, so it differs from the shorter village programme above.
Confirm the duration of each activity in your booking. A full programme title does not tell you how much time is spent riding, waiting, travelling or meeting the animals. The snowmobile arrangement lists two people per vehicle; ask about driver and passenger requirements before confirming participation.
This combination needs its own check of equipment, snow conditions and schedule. Do not carry across a riding duration or equipment list from a different snowmobile excursion. If your priority is the mountains rather than the cultural programme, compare it with the options in our Khibiny winter day-trip guide.
What snow conditions change
Meeting animals and riding on a snowy trail have different requirements. A visit can be worthwhile without a sled ride, but only if that matches what you wanted to book. Snow in a photograph or on a city pavement does not confirm suitable conditions on the activity route.
For a late-autumn or early-winter trip, ask which activities are operating on your exact dates and what happens if a ride cannot run. Check the agreed change, transfer or cancellation terms for your programme; there is no single arrangement that applies to every excursion.
Do not tell children a particular ride is certain until it has been confirmed. Follow the handlers’ instructions around the animals, and ask before touching or feeding them. Time with dogs should be comfortable for both the guests and the animals, not a race to get every photograph.
Questions to settle before booking
- Does the programme include an encounter, a sled ride, or both?
- What are the activity duration and the total time with return transport from Murmansk?
- What participation conditions apply to each guest, especially children?
- Are you getting tea, a snack or a full meal, and can the food requirements be met?
- Which clothing and equipment are supplied, and what should you wear yourself?
- Where is English-speaking assistance provided, and how will instructions at each activity be explained?
Send these details with your dates and group size when planning the trip. English-speaking assistance does not automatically mean every activity staff member speaks English. A confirmed language arrangement matters particularly for instructions and safety briefings.
For the rest of the itinerary, our family winter planning guide covers longer journeys and outdoor days. The wider winter activities guide helps compare an animal visit with ice floating or a day in the mountains. Current prices and dates are on the linked programme pages rather than repeated here.
