Khibiny in Winter: Day Trips Without Skiing from Murmansk

Winter activities
You do not need to ski to spend a winter day in the Khibiny Mountains. Start by choosing between sightseeing around Kirovsk and a dedicated snowmobile outing. They are different programmes, with different inclusions and time spent at each stop.
Both require room in your itinerary for the journey from Murmansk. The riding time or time on a cable car is only part of the day.
Compare the two programmes
| Programme | Main focus | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Khibiny and Kirovsk sightseeing | The cable car, Snow Village, SnowBus and the named sightseeing stops in the current programme | Husky sledding or snowmobile riding is included |
| Kirovsk snowmobile day trip | A riding activity with a briefing and the listed equipment | Riding time is the whole trip duration, or sightseeing tickets are included |
A sightseeing day without skiing
The Khibiny and Kirovsk sightseeing programme is the starting point if you want mountain views and the named attractions rather than a day centred on riding.
Check which stops are operating on your date. The cable car and seasonal attractions can be affected by weather and opening schedules. Ask how the route would change if an attraction is unavailable. Confirm meal arrangements and the approximate return time before booking.
Private arrangements should be checked on their own terms. The published group inclusions are not a universal list for every private trip.

A dedicated snowmobile outing
Choose the Kirovsk snowmobile day trip if riding is your priority. It has its own route, equipment and participation requirements.
Confirm the riding time and the total time away from Murmansk separately. Ask whether you will ride as a driver or passenger, whether the machine is shared and what equipment is supplied in the sizes you need. Snow and weather can affect the route.
Do not assume that meals, solo riding, a cable-car trip or other Kirovsk attractions are included. Use the current programme page for the exact arrangements.
If you also want to meet huskies
The Kirovsk snowmobile day trip does not include husky sledding. If you want both activities, compare the combined programme from Murmansk and check its route separately.
For a different route combining animal activities and snowmobiling, compare Sámi Culture, Husky Sledding and Snowmobiles from Murmansk. Confirm its schedule and riding time before booking. It is not the same excursion as the Khibiny snowmobile outing.
Our guide to huskies, reindeer and Sámi village visits explains the differences between the animal programmes.
Allow for the journey from Murmansk
Kirovsk is a full-day direction from Murmansk. Leave enough time for the return drive and avoid booking a flight, train or another prepaid excursion immediately after an assumed return time. Send onward travel details to the manager before confirming the day.
Consider the previous evening too. After a late Northern Lights outing, an early departure for the mountains may leave little time to rest. For the wider itinerary, see three or four days in Murmansk and Teriberka.
What to confirm before booking
- The exact programme, pickup point and approximate return time.
- Which seasonal attractions and activities are operating.
- Driver and passenger requirements, including conditions for children.
- Supplied equipment and the clothing you should bring.
- Meals, optional extras and the arrangements if individual stops change.
- Where English-speaking accompaniment is provided and the language used by activity staff or museum guides.
Use the programme pages for current prices and departure dates. If you are still deciding between the mountains, ice floating and animal visits, compare the winter activities from Murmansk before choosing your day.
