Murmansk and Teriberka with Kids: Planning a Winter Trip

Family trip planning
A winter family trip to Murmansk needs time for the journeys as well as the sights. Teriberka takes a full day, and a northern lights outing can mean a late evening. Before choosing excursions, think about how your child handles long drives, outdoor stops and changes to their usual bedtime.
You can then build the trip around the things you most want to see: the Barents Sea coast, the city or an evening looking for the aurora.
Choose the pace before the programme
Tell us your children’s ages when you first enquire so we can check the requirements for your chosen activities. Boat trips, snow activities and other outings need their own checks. If you are travelling with a younger child, explain how they handle long journeys and time outdoors.
A private format is worth discussing if your family needs extra stops or less walking. Agree the route and timing before booking, including where you can eat and which parts of the day will be outdoors.
Swipe the table sideways on a small screen.
| Part of the trip | What to consider with children | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Teriberka by land | A full day away from your hotel, with travel and coastal walks | Total duration, walking sections and meal arrangements |
| Teriberka with a boat trip | More time on the excursion and a separate sea outing | Suitability for your child, onboard facilities and a correctly sized life jacket |
| Northern lights outing | Evening travel and waiting outside | Departure updates, return arrangements and the following morning’s plans |
| A day in Murmansk | City stops and any museum visit | Walking time, indoor stops and museum reservations |
Give Teriberka a full day
Our Teriberka land excursion is planned as an approximately ten-hour day from Murmansk. That includes much more than the drive: stops, walking and time in the village and on the coast. Weather can affect the route and timing.
For a family, the useful comparison is between that day and the programme with a boat trip. Decide whether going to sea matters to you before adding it to the itinerary. Tell the manager your child’s age and, when checking a life jacket, their weight. Ask about the facilities on the boat assigned to your trip.
Coastal walks also need some thought if you use a pushchair. Explain what you plan to bring and ask which sections of the route are practical. Do not assume the whole excursion will be accessible with it.

Leave room after an aurora evening
An evening searching for the northern lights is different from a daytime sightseeing trip. Ask how departure updates will reach you and what return arrangements to expect. Then look at the next morning before booking another early start.
Seeing the aurora is never guaranteed. The northern lights tour guide explains what to check about the outing. If another evening is available during your stay, ask whether an additional outing would be a separate booking.

Keep clothes and food within reach
Pack thermal underwear, a warm jumper or fleece, winter outerwear, insulated footwear, a hat and gloves. Take spare gloves and socks in your day bag, together with water and a familiar snack. You should be able to reach those things during a stop without unpacking your main luggage.
Our trip preparation page covers clothing and the details to send before arrival. Mention dietary requirements before booking, and check meals against your chosen programme.
Keep the flight day in mind
Avoid placing a full coastal excursion immediately before your flight. In winter, road access can change, and the land trip and boat departure need separate confirmation. A city day may be an alternative to discuss, but it is not an automatic replacement for a cancelled excursion.
The weather changes guide explains which arrangements to confirm if plans change. Send your flight details along with your preferred excursions so the manager can consider the order of your days.
Tell us about your family
Send your travel dates, the number of adults, children’s ages and the activities you have in mind. Add your hotel, any child-seat or pushchair requirements, and anything that affects walking or meal planning. We can discuss a programme around those details before you book.
